The children in classroom 1 and 2 were showing an interest in playing in the garden and digging in the dirt during outdoor time. Sometimes while playing in the dirt the children would pretend to make different kinds of foods with the mud. Through this observation we introduced a mud kitchen area in the outdoor space that the children are now utilizing and enjoying! The children love cooking different “foods” and coming up with mud soups and cakes in the mud kitchen. We asked the children what tools they thought the kitchen needed and they responded with many different ideas including:“spoons, pots and ice cream cones”. We included some of these items in the mud kitchen and the children have taken interest in using these tools to play restaurant and drive through games with each other. The mud kitchen has encouraged the children to dig, scoop and get creative outside and we are excited to see what else they create in this new and exciting space!
