Blast off to outer space

We are learning about Outer Space this month in Classroom One! The children have been very interested in our solar system, learning the names of the planets, about constellations, what asteroids are and even how the planets move around the sun and how that effects our day and nighttime. Our classroom dramatic play area has transformed into a spaceship and the kids have loved pretending they are astronauts.

We have been practicing our scissor skills in Classroom One almost every day. With this activity we had the children cut out squares, the number depending on how many letters they have in their name, they then glued those squares onto the paper, cut out a triangle and made a rocket! They wrote their letters in each square, painted or colored on some flames and even cut out a rocket ship countdown.

We have also been teaching the kids about constellations. In this picture we asked the children to make their own constellations. Some made shapes, others just drew lines randomly and created their own abstract constellation. The kids were quick to understand that we can’t actually see the lines of the constellations in the sky, but if we look hard we can imagine the pictures they create.

We also got the children involved in making specific constellations but poking holes into prepared constellations and then going under the table to shine a flashlight through the paper to ‘project’ their constellation onto the table. They really enjoyed the star gazing opportunity they created!

Ask your kids about what they learned in our Outer Space unit!
