The Mitten

In Classroom One over the last 2 weeks we have been studying the book “The Mitten” by Jan Brett. We have been integrating our story time into all of the classroom activities.

One project that we worked on for an entire week and a half was each child’s own mitten! They colored all of the animals, cut them out, colored the mitten, laced the mitten together and then put all of the animals inside of the mitten just like in the story! It was fun to see the kids try and remember the proper order of the animals getting inside.

At our playdough station we made hedgehogs using white playdough, black beans and dried fettucine noodles. The children broke the noodles to make the poky hedgehog spikes and stuck black beans on for eyes. In this picture we have a mommy, daddy, baby and monster hedgehog!

We also showed the children how to do symmetry painting on the easel. They painted in their traced mitten and then folded the paper and watched how 1 mitten became 2!

This is such a fun winter story for the kids and they have loved all of the different activities we have been able to do.
