The Mitten

Inspired by Jann Brett’s book, The Mitten, the Kindergarten Class had various activities that reflected how well they grasped the whole story and how they perceived the characters such as:

-Retelling the story at the circle:

During circle time, the children had to retell the story through a role play. Eight children played the roles of the animals who found their way inside the mitten to warm themselves up as it was winter. Nathneal played the role of Nick, the boy whose mitten got lost on his way to school. Kalista played the role of the grandmother, who sewed the white mittens for her grandson, Nick.

-Creating their mittens:

The children were each provided with a mitten that they had to sew on their own. They designed and decorated their mittens using different art materials. Then, they colored their pictures of the eight animals.

-Retelling the story The Mitten to Dad and Mom:

The children took home their hand-made mittens with the pictures of the animals to retell the story to their parents.

-Molding/Building the scene of The Mitten

A few of our children were so into it that they built the scene and setting of the story with white playdough as the snow, miniature trees and animals, and the lost mitten. They, then, retold and re-enacted the story again and again and again…
